Golden Temple

History
The foundation stone of the Golden Temple was laid by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru, in 1577. It was completed in 1604 under the supervision of Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Sikh Guru. The temple is built in the middle of a sacred pool (Amrit Sarovar), which gives Amritsar its name. The Golden Temple's architecture reflects a harmonious blend of Hindu, Islamic, and Sikh styles. The gold plating on the temple's dome and walls, which gives it its iconic appearance, was added by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the early 19th century. The temple has a unique tradition of serving free meals to all visitors, known as langar, irrespective of their background or religion.
